Red Velvet’s Rookie is a nice addition to their predictable nature

2017-2014=3 years. Well for Red Velvet its been 2 years and some change, but right now I am just gonna go with three years. Anyway, Red Velvet has been around since 2014, almost three years, which for some doesn’t seem like a long time. Still we have moved through several albums now, which means several comebacks…and…a lot of them feel the same.

This isn’t going to be a long or thorough review.

Rookie sounds like Red Velvet. That’s about as much as I can say really.

(Of Course there is more)

The song fits Red Velvet’s brand of cute offbeat pop while not coming off weird or strange. It’s a very average K pop song, and the group handles it well. I do like the beat and it swings hard. It’s funky and fun. It’s on par with what the group has released, lining up with Dumb Dumb in several ways.

Overall I can’t think of a reason to not like this song, after so long. The video is strange, but to be honest fits the group in their strange ways. The video reminds me of Happiness with the random and very noticable sets. However here the group leans heavily on the fourth wall with the opening and ending scenes indicating that is not their reality. Once again…something the group has done before.

Rookie is Red Velvet in the most comfortable, and frankly too familiar setting. While it doesn’t excel like Dumb Dumb or is as catchy as Russian Roulette, it is a passable track.

Unpretty Rap Star forces me out of my small hiatus

The talk of a All lady MC rap show was appealing, until information started to leak. People found out their faves were not there. People found out Jimin from AoA was there. That clip of Jessi rapping in English on the show leaked…it’s a lot.

But the show must go on…and a cypher has been released.

I was really only feeling like one of them…and that was Cheetah. I need more of her.

Look the thing about rap is that it is a legitimate style of vocalization that people need to take seriously.

Rapping is just like singing. Everyone can rap, but not everyone should rap.

Here we are seeing a lot…and I mean a lot…of poor work.

Like I said, I was really only interested in one of them, but I think a few of them have some skills.

That being: Cheetah, Tymee, Lil Cham

The rest…well they exist.

As for the inclusion of Jimin (aka possible viewer bait)…Iactually take her more seriously than some of them. I don’t think she is completely terrible, but she obviously wasn’t thinking of being a rapper prior to AoA. I don’t know…apparently she is involved in the songwriting process for her own raps….but like so does Taecyeon on occasion and he is still terrible. Still there is something about Jimin that I like, so I hope this experience is a positive one for her developmentally.

Rapping is a serious thing, and it takes a lot of time to craft and hone your skills, which I think some of these ladies really don’t do (this also applies to singing, but y’all ain’t gonna listen to that). You are not just born with great skills, you need to work on it. That takes time…

Overall Unpretty Rapstar looks a mess, and I pray for everyone involved.

2PM returns with Go Crazy (plus album spoiler)

How do I explain my feelings about 2PM?

Basically, I appreciate them, but I am okay without them. They are not terrible by any means, and Grown is one of my favorite albums from last year. They work well as a group, and don’t look off like some do…but…eh.

None the less, I was curious as to what was going to happen on their next album. Grown had a much darker/smoother/mature quality to it.

Everything about this new album sounded like it was going to ditch the suits and monocrome aesthetic and go for colors.

Okay it should be noted that this album was supposed to see the light of day way earlier…I think May or June was the original release date…but…things happened and there was a push back.

So this song in a way…doesn’t make sense to release this late in the summer. Shit leaves are turning, pumpkin spice products are on the shelves, people already summoning demons for Halloween. It just…it’s kind of late.

That being said, I don’t hate the song. I don’t particularly love it. But it’s not bad. Like most JYPE songs…the song is distributed rather evenly. Everyone gets shine at some point, and it doesn’t sound bad.

The video…eh…once again it feels too late for the video.

Overall I don’t hate it. I don’t love it. On the most minimum level, I kind of like it. The song will probably grow on me…that’s if I listen to it again.

Alright…I have been slacking, so let’s get to the good stuff…teasers!

Album spoiler

We are obviously getting a fun party like vibe musically. Everything is much brighter than Grown. Even the pop upbeat tracks off of Grown does not match the darkest on Go Crazy. I am already interest in where they are going musically with this. It sounds really engaging (in a fun, we about to party kind of way).
