Huzzy’s 20 songs of 2016: 15-11

We are back with part 2 of a 4 part series. Once again 2016 has been a surprising meh year, but I found some gems that I did indeed like. Sadly once again, I did not get the full spectrum of music in 2016, so this list is heavy on established idols. Hopefully next year this will be remedied.

As always:

  • Opinions
  • The order is non-existent except for the fact that the top 10 were played more throughout the year for me.
  • The list is mostly women…hopefully next year I won’t think boygroups are releasing crap.
  • A special link will be available for this list in the upcoming future

Enjoy!

So here is the thing…life sucks. I got hit hard last year and that slowed me down incredibly. I used to try and crank out reviews for songs as soon as possible, but I decided to give myself some time to make sure that I could fully dive into the song. And then that turned into me choosing between work, school, sleep and this blog so I obviously chose the more important ones. Anyway while song reviews are picking back up…album reviews have kind of fallen to the wayside.

This is going to be a long ass text post so here is the summary: Albums are long form, reviewing them takes time, I was cranking out reviews, A lot of albums sound the same to me and therefore are not worth the effort of writing about them.

Good Good? Yes

Let’s get into it.

Yeonjung will be joining Cosmic Girls

Cosmic Girls will be returning for their first comeback (second single) with the addition of Producer 101 and I.O.I fame Yeonjung. This news has brought some ire from fans, claiming it is a mistake for *insert various reasons*. In all honesty, I won’t deny that this could go bad. It probably will…but…I do think there is something that could go right from all this.

Got7’s Fly isn’t worth the wait.

After making progress with If You Do and Just Right, Got7 are back to make more music…

*Returns to sender*

snuggle

The song isn’t…terrible/garbage/a waste of my space. But the thing is…if you gonna do a rap heavy song…please…be good at it. The chorus is literally the only part I actually care about, and that is barely. The rest of it is just…well the song exist.

From the beginning when JB proves he may need to go find himself as a singer, to the drop into a trap beat with very mediocre rapping to the song just simply never picking up at any time. There is nothing interesting about the song at all. It doesn’t have a catchy chorus to rely on, none of the verses are good, the actual song is just MEH.

The music video is something. I think just focusing on them dancing with swooping shots was smart…but that isn’t enough to save it. Nothing happens…which is perfect for this weak ass song.

Well that’s it…Got7 has always kind of been spotty musically for me, but last year was definitely a step in the right direction for them. Sadly this was a misstep.

Their album Departure is out now, go get it if you feeling them as a group!

Final 2015 prediction results

The end of the year is here, and that means a new set of predictions will be on the way. Until I then, enjoy me coming back to my old 2015 predictions for your enjoyment!

Here is the old post ( do not click any of the links)

SNSD will do like two more albums over the course of their last three years, but mostly solo work and TTS is going to be the priority.

Still right on this. Despite doing an extensive promo run for Lion Heart, TTS still feels more emphasized than ever (well Tiffany and Taeyeon do…). Next year I see one more album and a lot of individual work with TTS on the forefront. Be on the look out for Tiffany’s solo work.

f(x) won’t see an improvement group wise, continued emphasis on solo work, two solos, and Sulli will start to reappear.

Sulli left, no solos beyond Amber, and 4Walls felt more like a unified effort for the group…even if the album was below standards. Anyway I don’t see the group going on much longer,

Red Velvet will be SM’s first time conforming for a hit in a good minute.

And I was wrong. Both Ice Cream Cake and Dumb Dumb were atypical K Pop songs, that did wonders for the group (as well as Yeri, Irene, and Joy’s solo stuff). Now that we know SM can find a style for the group, it will

2ne1 will go on a long hiatus, solos for everyone (except Bom and Dara).

That hiatus part was true. Ultimately people are just waiting for CL to fail, nevermind that it is going to take longer to get her going in the states. Still on the Korean side of things, Dara has been keeping herself busy. Minzy is twerking for Jesus, but not on any shows which is sad. Bom finally made an appearance out in the world, and was welcomed with open (but very criticial of her looks) arms.

The new generation will rise, but Lee Hi and Akmu will be left behind.

It’s the end of 2015 and Akmu only did some tourist song…so yeah…iKon, CL and Big Bang were the top priorities over at YG, and yeah…if you not on YG’s love list you are kind of fucked. Hopefully 2016 will see rebirth of those two acts. Winner is coming back and they are the antithesis to the usual YG boygroup…

2PM won’t care about Korean releases when they can still get money anywhere else.

My House was left in the dust for big money else where. Japan solo tours for Wooyoung, Junho and Jun. K, Taecyeon, Chansung and Nichkhun did the variety/acting work. These guys pretty much won’t have to do extensive Korean promotion as a group unless necessary.

Got7 will cry at their first win…which will happen in 2015.

Got7 won their first award, but JB nad Jr. didn’t cry so it obviously doesn’t count.

Joo will get a chance out of the dungeon, but Baek Ah Yeon will have to take her place.

Joo left and has done nothing but one single. Baek Ah Yeon got herself a musical stint playing Cinderella, and if all else…will probably come back in 2016 with another Starbucks rack track. Baek Yerin escaped her fate with a well received EP. Bernard just resurfaced at a JYP concert…but I am not 100% sure that wasn’t a life size poster.

Wonder Girls…

The revitalization of the Wonder Girls made it worth it to be wrong. Not only did the group come back with a well liked album and single, it seems like they are stronger in reception (thanks Yubin). My guess is that the group will come back next year with an EP, but we are also getting HA:TFELT and Sunmi solo albums, with a Yubin release for good measure.

Miss A will continue to be where they are no matter what.

Colors happened. Only You was a hit…and then nothing. Jia did more work. Fei went home I guess…I don’t know she disappeared. Suzy took a break, but seems to be back on her grind. And Min gained weight and was dragged for a mess of a performance on some random singing show. Ultimately my bets are this group is going to start fading away because of a certain group…

15& and Bernard will be pushed over to ASC to continue collecting a check for JYP.

Well I was wrong…sort of. Jimin got a permanent slot on ASC and has been getting better over there. Bernard did that one song for a Hyundai commercial with Jimin…Yerin took time for herself, came back and gave us a made for Starbucks rack track album…which slayed.

Apink’s next album will be a full one, with a new look and sound.

Apink didn’t do it this year, but I can feel it coming. Ultimately all the girls are now of age, and the older ones are probably sick of the pastel sounds. In retrospect Remember wasn’t complete garbage nor was it completely cute…but I feel it in my bones that Apink are about to recreate Girl’s Day’s Expectations

G.Na will continue to be pretty and slightly overrated, but no musical growth.

Still not wrong, even with her not doing anything.

4Minute=That subunit that happened in 2013 and three Hyuna projects…also a full album comeback.

I was wrong, and my punishment is them working with Skrillex for their awaited comeback.

The end of an era will begin (aka Sistar will start to bow out group wise).

I was wrong…for the most part. Shake It happened and nobody wanted it. I think the last half of 2015 was supposed to be Soyu and Hyorin rising but shit happens. Shit being Hyorin doing less than average on a show that she had no business being on (she hardly brought drama and her intended purpose was to be controversial…and then Truedy happened)…also Soyu’s back injury caused her to bow out in the middle of what probably would have been Some part 2. With Soyu still being out of commission, Sistar are not attending the End of Year events (more reason for me to not watch), and their comeback will be pushed back because Hyorin cannot carry the group like that. Also yeah still end of an era because Starship have been releasing teasers for their KoreanxChinese 12 member girl group.

StarshipX will find success in their underground hitmakers.

Jooyoung ain’t do shit, Junggigo ain’t do shit. But Mad Clown did and people liked it…so…can’t be mad.

BigHit will continue to act like there are not other people in their company other than BTS.

I’M STILL RIGHT HO!

Teen Top’s Niel will continues to look like an emaciated Taemin, do exactly what Taemin did in his debut, but it will be better.

I was wrong

Crayon Pop and Exid slay, but people will be super obtuse about it.

People have opened their eyes to Exid so no problems there. Crayon Pop got pushed to the side despite FM being decent. Ultimately their image is very novelty despite its uniqueness, which proves that the masses don’t line fun/new shit, and girl groups will be better off just conforming to the sexist standards (cute/sexy dichotomy)

Girl groups are going to fight to the death for some of the top and second spots.

I mean this was a given. 2015 did give us some new competitors though…and trust…it’s gonna be lit in 2016

Anyway that is it for this. The new one will be up soon enough. Hopefully I will not flake…

Let’s return to my 2015 predictions

So earlier in the year I had posted a little prediction’s list for 2015…well since most of the year is over…let’s look at what I thought/hoped would happen.

SNSD will do like two more albums over the course of their last three years, but mostly solo work and TTS is going to be the priority.

With the news that Taeyeon and Tiffany are getting solos (back to back) and a TTS comeback to immediately follow…kind of seeing this as only true. Outside of those three, we see ladies working to solidify their places. Yoona is getting roles in China. Hyoyeon has by far been the most active of the members in my opinion. Once again, this about them finding their places post SNSD, which will inevitably come. Have to admit though, they showed up for the last promo round. Apparently kicking out a member really motivates

f(x) won’t see an improvement group wise, continued emphasis on solo work, two solos, and Sulli will start to reappear.

I was kind of correct. Sulli did reappear…only to leave f(x). TBH good for her. I was banking on Luna getting a solo (especially with some of her newfound popularity from earlier in the year), but I was right about another musical (In The Heights). The emphasis on solo work has not been dropped. Victoria has missed several performances because of her out of group duties. Amber opened up a youtube. Luna had some good coverage in the beginning of the year (she attends a lot of events). Krystal has oddly been quiet, but that will probably change soon.

Red Velvet will be SM’s first time conforming for a hit in a good minute.

I was wrong with Ice Cream Cake, but Dumb Dumb is coming up so yeah (anticipate the teaser post). Still they got a hit off the song, a new group member, and several of the ladies are in the public awareness.

2ne1 will go on a long hiatus, solos for everyone (except Bom and Dara).

I was wrong here. CL and Dara are the only ones actually working. While CL is over here in the states simmering on a debut that is taking entirely too long considering what could have been done, Dara has managed to keep her name in the public awareness. Minzy is doing the same shit Yubin did, and is on this long ass vacation. Bom is still no where to be seen.

The new generation will rise, but Lee Hi and Akmu will be left behind.

I wasn’t wrong…Lee Hi’s next project will have less to do with YG and more to do with Epik High’s Tablo. Akdong Musician is…well…they are alive. Other than that, there has been emphasis on the return of Big Bang, and iKon (who are to debut soonish)

2PM won’t care about Korean releases when they can still get money anywhere else.

Called it. Though there was more technicalities than anything, 2PM’s still pretty much emphasizing solo work in Korea than group work. Their comeback sadly was only a week long, which is a shame because it was cute.

Got7 will cry at their first win…which will happen in 2015.

JYP has two confirmed music releases happening: Day6 and TWICE. I sincerely doubt they are just not going to have Got7 not release one thing for a win. If they don’t I was wrong, and it will be 2016 when JB and Jr. cry hugging each other.

Joo will get a chance out of the dungeon, but Baek Ah Yeon will have to take her place.

She got out of the dungeon alright…and moved her ass to Woolim…where she has not been seen yet. Also her replacement wasn’t Baek Ah Yeon, who managed herself a hit therefore proving her worth, but has sadly been Bernard and Baek Yerin.

Wonder Girls…

I was wrong. I am proud of that. What makes their comeback worth it is the fact that they knew they had to revitalize the brand. With the loss of vital members SUnye and SOhee (both popular, and one owas the main vocalist), this allowed the group to redefine who the Wonder Girls were…they did a damn good job with it too.

Miss A will continue to be where they are no matter what.

Was not wrong here. Colors happened, and as soon as it was over, it was solo work for everyone…except Suzy at first (which casued a ruckus because lord knows Suzy is always waiting for a job). Now she is in talks for one so there’s that. Miss A are in the same boat as their inbetween sisters, 2ne1 and f(x). However I would wager that they could keep going for a little while longer.

15& and Bernard will be pushed over to ASC to continue collecting a check for JYP.

I wasn’t wrong. Jimin is over at ASC. Bernard pops up on occasion in someone’s instagram. Yerin is…well…she is alive.

Apink’s next album will be a full one, with a new look and sound.

I was wrong. Sadly I was so wrong. Remember has a catchy chorus, but that song is garbage. What’s worse is that during their concert series (that is looking like a tour now), they solo performances were very mature. Namjoo performed Dirrty by Christina Aguilera, and one a place in my heart because of it. Sadly Acube is too invested in this image that is will no longer be viable with all the fresh, younger girl groups out.

G.Na will continue to be pretty and slightly overrated, but no musical growth.

II’m not wrong, but she has done nothing this year so…eh.

4Minute=That subunit that happened in 2013 and three Hyuna projects…also a full album comeback.

The year is not over yet, but so far: we have another EP in Crazy and Hyuna’s ep A+…we got a couple of months so…

The end of an era will begin (aka Sistar will start to bow out group wise).

I’m…wrong? We got a new ep with Shake It…but that’s it groupwise. Dasom did get another acting role, but it was more of a comedy, which she is getting some praise for. Bora is doing exactly what I expected from her. Hyorin’s…well Hyorin is working on tinkering her image and brand. I still bet new music is coming from her. Soyu hasn’t put out anything by herself yet, but I still see it coming.

StarshipX will find success in their underground hitmakers.

Starship doesn’t know how to do shit right…but like okay.

BigHit will continue to act like there are not other people in their company other than BTS.

WHAT I SAY!

Teen Top’s Niel will continues to look like an emaciated Taemin, do exactly what Taemin did in his debut, but it will be better.

I was wrong

Crayon Pop and Exid slay, but people will be super obtuse about it.

Exid slayed, Crayon Pop didn’t…yet.

Girl groups are going to fight to the death for some of the top and second spots.

This is really an ongoing one tbh.

So yeah that’s it. I was wrong. I may end up updating this once again in December, but yeah…this is fun!

Faves doing things: 15&’s Yerin finally does something after a hiatus

*Insert something about JYP not properly managing 15&*

*Insert something about their talent*

*Insert something about how JYPE managed to completely kill the hype that Park Jimin got from K Pop Star*

*Insert tagline, “But I’m not bitter”*

Here is Yerin performing Sia’s Chandelier.

Here is her new version of Chrisette Michele’s Like A Dream

Trying really hard not to air some frustrations. Not even from a fan perspective and admitted bias, but 15& really has potential to do something. I say they still have it because look at Ah Yeon. She got a hit three years into her career, and while JYPE still managed to drop the ball on capitalizing off of that, people at the very least know her name (Even if only for five minutes). Nobody is truly out for the count, and I think 15& could have something if they were invested in for more than five minutes at a time. But…that means actually caring about their careers.

Especially since you went on these damn shows to scout people, and you not even doing anything with them outside of bare minimum…you know what…

Hopefully with JYP’s sub label (Studio J) which is for the artsy kids and less K pop oriented music…Yerin will finally shine and get more jobs.

Or something…

Hyorin follow up: It’s not just the hair…

I feel like I need to do a follow up post about the whole Hyorin debacle because…I don’t think I was articulate enough the last time. I’ve seen fans who have been battling each other over this, so I know this is a “hot topic”.

I wrote this post in a very bad, stressed and tired mood so a lot of the original post was me basically cursing and shit. But I got a full night’s rest and my life is on the right path again. So let’s give the edited version of all this.

The issue that I am having with Hyorin as of now, is not the hair. Now I am not going to speak for others, but if you roll your ass onto my blog, understand these feelings I am having are very negative, but are not just directed at her hair. The hair is just a part of the problem I am seeing.

That said problem is the fact that Hyorin, who has never once dressed in a fashion outside of casual street wear off stage, and was a glammed up idol on, is now taking a new direction as a rapper. And instead of actually just leaving all well alone, her ENTIRE image has suddenly been dressed up/down to look like a thug. She is giving off the vibe that she is hard as her image as a rapper. Now here is the thing…she did not have to. Everything in those pictures, from her nonverbal cues, to her clothes, and yes her hair is saying something to me. I’m hardcore gangsta rapper. Starship, her stylist, her did not have to take on this image. She is not about no life.

“But it’s a concept”

Yeah and that’s not the best argument to make in this case. I have the biggest issues with a lot of Hip Hop based concept groups because often times they take on this same exact image. They are dark, brooding, dangerous bad boys (Girl groups tend to not deal with this for…well reasons). They wear clothes that are exaggerated and baggy. Street wear reminiscent of the hood of yesteryear. You want to know why they do that? Because they are saying that in order to be a k pop group doing a hip hop based concept, you are going to be edgy and not the norm (Your Shinees, Infinites, B1A4)…no you gonna look like G-Unit circa 2005.That’s transparent to me. They treat a culture as the bad and dangerous, and everyone secretly wants the bad boys (also note that a lot of their songs tend to be loud and aggressive). And that is in fact a tiny bit racist. Because not only are you picking and choosing from a culture that is not even yours…you are saying that this is how we can be edgy and dangerous and bad boys. That this is not the norm.

That is what Hyorin is doing. It doesn’t feel like Hyorin is just embracing hip hop because she wants to. Now she has actually said she would love to do more hip hop and rap flavored music…I will give her that. I love her sense of adventure musically (Even though Starship does their best to suppress just that). But Hyorin has worked with several rappers who never have dressed like this. She has access to so much in terms of resources and this is what we are getting. The way I see it, she isn’t embracing the culture, but is more or less a job that needs to be done and dressing up as this or that because it is a simple stereotype (which has some racist implications).

Hyorin is less of someone that needs to be condemned (however she is absolutely not above criticism), and more of yet another example of how an entire culture and in some ways Black people are viewed and consumed. Over here in the states there was the whole big thing with Kylie Jenner and them ugly ass cornrows (they were terrible). Or how Zendaya’s faux locs were basically compared to weed and patchouli oil (yet somewhere Kylie was lauded for her locs). I know for a lot of y’all that ain’t from over here don’t understand why this leaves us feeling a way. For us to be condemned for these styles (being called ghetto and hood) only for it to become fashionable in the presence of whiteness (ghetto=urban) is a lot to us.

But I’m not here to give a lesson on racism and how it can actually be more than just calling me slurs, lynching, *apparent* segregation. Y’all obviously don’t care.

Now yes, Hyorin, a young woman from South Korea, has no ties to the Western ideals and the implications can get hazy. However that does not excuse shit. They get their visuals from somewhere. That look didn’t just pop up (no this is not where you get to sit there and try to shift blame onto the west, that’s not the point of this…keep going). They have no obvious ties to that aspect of a culture, yet and still they are consuming it and fashioning themselves after it so they can make a statement/profit.

Now do I think Hyorin is racist? No. Do I think she is the problem? Not really. That’s way too simple logic. It also completely ignores that this is a larger problem in seated in racism (there’s that word y’all don’t like hearing unless convenient or apparent). She is more or less yet another example of how they (media of any form) will simplify aspects of a culture (in this case hip hop) for mass consumption and profit.

I love her to death, but I can’t stand by this.

This look was very much thought out. It takes well over a a good minute to braid hair like that. They didn’t just stumble onto this look. It was thought out for mass consumption because they don’t believe Hyorin was hip hop enough. Instead of just letting her be, they turned her into a caricature as if it was just another “strange” concept.

And that’s it.
